What is Manjappai?

Manjappai

The word Manjappai is a Tamil word that literally translates to  the yellow bag. Why the yellow bag? As Indians we consider the colour yellow (turmeric) very auspicious, any occasion, be it Good or Bad starts with the colour yellow. Similarly the Manjappai holds a significant part in our lives, and is a symbol of Good luck.

Once I utter the word Manjappai it makes me feel Nostalgic, why?, because…

I remember those days when my mother used to demand an extra Manjappai from the textile store cashier.

I remember those days when I used to carry my exam pad to write my exams in this Manjappai.

I remember those days when I used to go grocery shopping in this bag.

I remember those days when I was a teenager and used to refuse to take this Manjappai out for shopping.

I remember the day when my father carried cash in this auspicious Manjappai to pay  my wedding expenses.

And, nevertheless do I remember the need to buy a grocery bag when we had this multipurpose Manjappai at home. What a great way to stay economic and environment friendly at the same time, right. This Manjappai has been a part and parcel of not only my life but the lives of many.

It’s not just a word, it’s a feeling.

So, no wonder the word Manjappai flashed in our minds when we had to decide a name for our online store.

We are pretty sure there are millions of you out there who wouldn’t be able to relate to these stories but just don’t worry, try saying Manjappai and the way it beautifully rolls in your tongue will make you fall in love with it;)
